...covered in dust and glory

Exactly! Someone was asking me why I knew so many film reviews and so few movies, and that's the reason. (Well, and the relative time commitment of reading a review and watching a movie.) I'm a little worried my friends are starting to think of wanting more than one woman in a film as an amusing strange quirk of mine, sigh.
The narrator agrees with you that they are a creepy cult that needs to be stopped and isnt sure they can be. ;) Although it probably does lead to the interesting question of if the *narrative* agrees... it's all very unreliable.
I see! Yeah, worrying that the movie narrative didn't think they were wrong was part of why I was put off. I had forgotten the line about men raised by women, but that was definitely one of the points where I was...displeased. Especially because it's such a quotable/quoted movie, including the parts that are Tyler being batshit and wrong.
Your point about the unreliable narration/size of the world makes a lot of sense -- the book does sound very interesting and nuanced. And I guess the movie may be more nuanced than my initial "DO NOT WANT" reaction let me see, though I don't think I'll be rewatching it to find out.
I can't think of a movie that lives up to its hype either. Though I'm probably the wrong person to ask....
(Ha, Pulp Fiction is on the list of things my friends want me to watch, too. I think I will suggest we watch other things on the list instead.)
